Houthi Forces Target Liberian Ship in Gulf
The Yemeni Armed Forces, led by spokesperson Yahya Saree, confirmed the targeting of the Liberia-flagged MV Groton in the Gulf of Aden for the second time this month, asserting it was due to the vessel's owner's violation of a Yemeni ban on ships entering ports in occupied Palestinian territories. The recent missile attack, which occurred approximately 130 nautical miles east of Aden, was reported by the UK Maritime Trade Operations, stating that while two missiles exploded near the vessel, the crew was unharmed. The Houthi rebels claim their maritime operations are in solidarity with Palestinians amidst ongoing Israeli military actions in Gaza, which they label as genocide. Yemeni forces have vowed to continue these attacks until Israel ceases its operations in Gaza, which have reportedly resulted in over 40,000 deaths since October 7, 2023. The escalating tensions in the region have prompted a US-led naval coalition to increase strikes against Houthi military sites, further fueling a cycle of retaliation. The Houthis have previously sunk vessels and have threatened to continue targeting ships they associate with Israel.
