Severe flooding in Sudan, exacerbated by ongoing civil conflict, has displaced over 12 million people and worsened an already dire humanitarian crisis. The UNHCR reported that heavy rains have recently impacted around 11,000 individuals in Kassala, where families have been forced to relocate multiple times due to violence and natural disasters, losing essential belongings in the process. The conflict, which erupted in April 2023, has interrupted agricultural production, leading to soaring food prices and malnutrition among displaced populations. Humanitarian efforts are underway, but challenges remain significant, including a lack of clean water and sanitation, increasing the risk of waterborne diseases. The situation has been described as a 'crisis over a crisis,' with children particularly vulnerable, as 18 million remain out of school. With more rain anticipated and the conflict ongoing, the conditions for displaced families are expected to deteriorate further.
