Kroger, Albertsons $24.6B Merger Faces Legal Hurdles
Kroger and Albertsons have proposed a $24.6 billion merger, which includes selling 579 stores to C&S Wholesale Grocers to alleviate anti-competition concerns. The merger, announced in October 2022, faces significant opposition from the Federal Trade Commission, labor unions, and several states, citing potential price hikes and reduced competition. The stores to be sold include Safeway, Albertsons, Vons, and other chains across multiple states. If the merger proceeds, it would impact around 20% of the U.S. grocery market and one in six grocery workers. Despite assurances from Kroger and Albertsons that no stores will close and employees' benefits will be maintained, critics remain concerned about the merger’s broader economic impact. The legal challenges are ongoing, with a trial scheduled for the end of August.
