Shri Thanedar election results

First-term Congressman Shri Thanedar faced a strong challenge from Detroit City Councilwoman Mary Waters in the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District. Initially, Waters took an early lead, but as more votes were counted, Thanedar regained the lead with 45.5% against Waters' 44.9%. Thanedar ran a series of negative ads targeting Waters' past bribery conviction and her stance on same-sex marriage, while some Black voters expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of a Black representative in Congress. Despite the competitive primary, Thanedar is expected to secure victory in the heavily Democratic district against Republican Martell Bivings in the general election. The district has historically favored Democratic candidates, with significant support for Biden and Clinton in previous elections. With fewer candidates this time, Thanedar's path to nomination remains strong, though he faces scrutiny regarding representation issues in the community.
