Christina McKelvie Takes Medical Leave for Cancer
Christina McKelvie, Scotland's Minister for Drugs and Alcohol Policy, has announced she will take medical leave to undergo treatment for secondary breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in June. McKelvie, who previously marked the end of her treatment for breast cancer in 2021, began her new treatment at the Beatson Cancer Centre in July and has carried out her duties for the past month. However, following recent medical appointments, she recognized the need to focus on her recovery. During her absence, Health Secretary Neil Gray and Public Health Minister Jenni Minto will cover her responsibilities. First Minister John Swinney expressed his support for McKelvie, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing her health. She also urged women to regularly check themselves and attend screening appointments, highlighting the ongoing importance of cancer awareness.
