New York City Shuts Down Illegal Smoke Shops

Mayor Eric Adams is intensifying efforts against illegal cannabis sales in New York City through 'Operation Padlock to Protect,' which has already resulted in the closure of approximately 1,000 illegal smoke shops out of 4,000 inspected statewide. Recently, he personally oversaw the destruction of four tons of seized cannabis at a Long Island incinerator, emphasizing that incineration is crucial to prevent the products from re-entering the community. The mayor highlighted the dangers of illicit cannabis, noting that it may contain harmful substances. The task force has seized over $63.7 million worth of cannabis-related products, and officials are determined to continue their crackdown. However, some shuttered shops have successfully challenged the city in court, raising questions about due process. Adams stressed that the city will not recycle the seized products and is committed to their complete destruction.
