Australia Approves $24B SunCable Renewable Project
Australia has approved the SunCable Australia-Asia Power Link project, which is set to become the world's largest solar and battery farm, located in the Northern Territory. The US$24 billion initiative will generate six gigawatts of energy, with four gigawatts for domestic use and two gigawatts exported to Singapore via a 4,300-kilometer undersea cable, meeting about 15% of Singapore's energy needs. The project, supported by tech billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, aims to begin energy production by 2030 and significantly bolster Australia's position as a leader in renewable energy. The approval includes strict environmental guidelines and the project still requires further sign-offs from Singapore, Indonesia, and Australian Indigenous communities. With the closure of coal-fired power plants imminent, this project is seen as a crucial step in reducing climate pollution and providing affordable, sustainable energy.
