Blue-green algae on Lake Shawnee
Multiple lakes in Kansas, including King Lake, Melvern Outlet River Pond, and Lake Shawnee, are under ongoing blue-green algae advisories due to harmful algal blooms (HABs) that can produce toxins posing health risks to humans and pets. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) warns that these blooms can appear as foam, scum, or paint on the water and can cause symptoms like rash, vomiting, and headache upon exposure. Residents are advised to avoid contact with the water and report any suspected health incidents related to the algae. In Rhode Island, Carbuncle Pond has lifted its advisory after blue-green algae levels returned to normal, allowing safe recreational activities. However, the risk of exposure remains critical, as animals can become seriously ill from ingesting contaminated water. Public health officials continue to monitor these conditions closely and urge caution around affected areas.
