Prince Victor Emmanuel of Savoy Dies at 86

Victor Emmanuel of Savoy, former crown prince of Italy, died at the age of 86 in Geneva, Switzerland. Born in Naples, Italy in 1937, Emmanuel was the son of the last king, Umberto II, and Maria José. The Savoy dynasty ruled Italy from 1861 to 1946, but after a referendum in favor of abolishing the monarchy and proclaiming a republic, Emmanuel's father was exiled, and Emmanuel himself was exiled in 1946. He was allowed to return to Italy in 2002 after giving up his claim to the throne. Emmanuel passed away in Geneva, surrounded by his family, and is survived by his wife and son. His son, Emanuele Filiberto, becomes the new head of the family.
