Maple Leafs Sign Tanev, Draft Ben Danford
The Toronto Maple Leafs have signed 34-year-old defenseman Chris Tanev to a six-year, $27 million contract, with an average annual value (AAV) of $4.5 million. Tanev, who finished last season with the Dallas Stars, is known for his strong defensive play and was acquired by the Leafs in a trade involving forward Max Ellis and a seventh-round draft pick. Additionally, the Maple Leafs signed goalie Joseph Woll to a three-year, $10.98 million contract extension. The team also made moves in the 2024 NHL Draft, selecting defenseman Ben Danford with the 31st overall pick after trading down from the 23rd spot to acquire an additional second-round pick. Danford, an 18-year-old from the Oshawa Generals, is regarded for his defensive capabilities and shot-blocking skills.
