Anson Dorrance retires
Anson Dorrance, the legendary head coach of the University of North Carolina women's soccer team, has announced his retirement after 45 seasons, during which he won a record 21 NCAA championships, the most by any coach in Division I sports. At 73 years old, Dorrance cited a lack of energy to continue at the level required for the program, expressing respect for the legacy he leaves behind. His tenure included coaching the U.S. women's national team, leading them to victory in the inaugural Women's World Cup in 1991. UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham praised Dorrance as a 'soccer, coaching and Tar Heel legend,' highlighting his profound impact on women's sports. Associate head coach Damon Nahas will take over as interim coach while a search for a new head coach is conducted. Dorrance's remarkable record includes a 934-88-53 overall coaching record, solidifying his legacy in college athletics.
