UN Reports Record Deaths of Aid Workers

The United Nations has reported a record 280 aid workers were killed globally in 2023, marking a 137% increase from the previous year, with over half of the fatalities occurring in Gaza amidst escalating violence. The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that 172 aid workers have already lost their lives in 2024, raising concerns that this year could surpass the grim toll. The majority of the deaths were attributed to Israeli airstrikes during the first three months of the Gaza conflict, while significant fatalities also occurred in South Sudan and Sudan. OCHA's interim head, Joyce Msuya, condemned the normalization of violence against aid workers and called for accountability and protection. The high death toll underscores the extreme risks faced by humanitarian personnel, predominantly local staff, operating in conflict zones. As World Humanitarian Day is observed, leaders are urging an end to attacks on civilians and stronger protections for aid workers.
