Record A-Level Results Highlight Education Disparities
Students across the UK achieved their best A-level results in decades, yet significant regional disparities and a widening gap between private and state schools persist. In London and the south-east, over 30% of A-level entries were awarded A* or A grades, while the north-east lagged behind with just one in three school leavers pursuing higher education. The gap in top grades between private (49.4%) and state schools (22.3%) is the largest recorded since 2018, raising concerns about educational equity. Additionally, although overall top grades in England increased, the East Midlands reported only 22.5% achieving A or A*. In Wales, while A-level results improved, the number of disadvantaged students gaining university placements decreased, highlighting ongoing educational challenges. Experts call for urgent action to address these inequities and ensure all students have equal opportunities.
