Australia Approves $24 Billion Solar Project
Australia has approved the SunCable project, which will become the world's largest solar and battery storage facility, covering 12,000 hectares in the Northern Territory. Backed by billionaire Mike Cannon-Brookes, the $24 billion project aims to produce 4 gigawatts of energy per hour for domestic use and export an additional 2 gigawatts to Singapore, meeting about 15% of the city's energy needs. Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek hailed the approval as a landmark moment, emphasizing Australia's potential as a leader in green energy. Despite this progress, the project still faces regulatory challenges, including approvals from Singapore's energy market authority and consultations with Indigenous communities. The Climate Council supports the initiative as vital for enhancing Australia's renewable energy mix, which currently relies significantly on fossil fuels. Energy production is expected to commence by 2030, with final investment decisions targeted by 2027.
