Heavy rainfall in Japan

Tropical Storm Maria made landfall in northern Japan's Iwate region on Monday, bringing record-breaking rainfall of 368.5 millimeters in 24 hours to the city of Kuji, the highest since records began in 1978. The storm has caused severe disruptions, including canceled flights and suspended train services, as authorities issued evacuation advisories for around 300,000 residents due to the risk of flooding and mudslides. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida assured that the government would provide support and information to those affected. Currently, about 2,000 residents have taken shelter, and warnings have been issued for further rainfall in the coming days. The storm is moving northwest and is expected to reach the Sea of Japan coast, marking the first typhoon to impact the Tohoku region since 2016. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far, although the situation remains critical.
