The UN Security Council has lifted a territorial arms embargo on the Central African Republic (CAR), originally imposed in 2013 amid violent intercommunal conflict. This unanimous decision, viewed by the CAR government as a diplomatic victory, allows for the supply of weapons to government forces, while maintaining restrictions on armed groups until July 2025. Foreign Minister Sylvie Baïpo-Temon hailed the move as a restoration of dignity for the CAR and a step towards peace. The resolution also authorizes member states to seize and dispose of weapons intended for armed groups, and emphasizes the need to prevent arms deliveries to such groups. The conflict in CAR, which has led to thousands of deaths and displacements, continues to be complicated by the presence of Russian mercenaries and various rebel factions. The Security Council has mandated further analysis of illicit trafficking networks fueling ongoing violence.
