Venice tourism tax

Venice's temporary tourist tax, implemented from April 25 to July 14, 2024, charged day-trippers €5 ($5.43) and successfully generated approximately €2.4 million, far exceeding initial expectations of €700,000. The initiative aimed to manage overtourism and preserve the city’s heritage, with over 3.6 million reservations made during the trial. Exemptions included hotel guests, local workers, students, and residents, which accounted for more than 1.4 million individuals. City officials are now considering doubling the fee to €10 ($16 AUD) for the next year, based on the positive results of the trial. Despite the tax, average daily visitors remained around 75,000, indicating minimal deterrent effects. Mayor Luigi Brugnaro expressed intent to analyze data further this autumn to refine the tax system for the future.
