Calls for Action Against Assam Chief Minister's Remarks
The Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has demanded immediate action against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for his recent remarks deemed 'anti-Muslim' and 'divisive'. In a letter to Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud, Home Minister Amit Shah, and BJP President J P Nadda, Jamiat president Maulana Mahmood Madani criticized Sarma's comments, particularly his derogatory references to 'Miya Muslims', as a betrayal of constitutional principles. Madani warned that Sarma's inflammatory statements could exacerbate social tensions and deepen ethnic divides in Assam, especially in light of threats against Bengali Muslims from various groups. He urged the Chief Minister to retract his statements and focus on fostering communal harmony instead of promoting discord. Additionally, Madani highlighted Sarma's claims regarding the state's demographic future and his labeling of dissent as 'jihad' as further examples of spreading hatred. The Jamiat has called for legal action against Sarma under hate speech provisions of the Indian Penal Code.
