The Onion Returns to Print After Decade
The Onion and Playboy are bucking the trend of digital-only media by reviving their print editions, signaling a notable shift in the publishing landscape. The Onion has announced its first print edition in over a decade, which will be available monthly to subscribers for $5, as part of a strategy to engage readers and enhance brand loyalty. The publication's CEO, Ben Collins, highlighted that the return to print is a nod to its origins in the 1980s and aims to complement its digital presence. Playboy, which ceased its print magazine in 2020, plans to release its first annual print issue in February 2025. Additionally, The Cut, a site under New York Magazine, is set to publish its first stand-alone fashion print edition in September. This resurgence in print comes amidst a backdrop of declining print circulation and advertising revenue for many other publications.
