Michael Lopez, 44, has been charged with the murder of 23-year-old Melvindale police officer Mohamed Said, along with multiple other felonies, including firearm and drug possession. Said was shot and killed by Lopez after a foot chase following a traffic stop. Lopez, who had been released from prison just weeks earlier for a previous violent crime, was arrested the next day. Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy emphasized the tragedy of the incident, noting that Said had just begun his career in law enforcement. Lopez faces up to life in prison if convicted. Said's funeral services are scheduled for Friday, and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer has ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff for the next 30 days in his honor.
