New Indictment Filed Against Donald Trump
Special counsel Jack Smith has filed a new indictment against former President Donald Trump, maintaining the same criminal charges but narrowing the scope of allegations following a Supreme Court ruling that grants presidents immunity for certain official acts. The updated indictment removes claims related to Trump's interactions with the Justice Department, an area deemed immune from prosecution by the Court's recent 6-3 decision. Notably, the indictment no longer lists Jeffrey Clark, a former Justice Department official, as a co-conspirator. However, it retains allegations that Trump attempted to pressure then-Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to certify the electoral vote count. The special counsel indicated that this updated indictment was presented to a grand jury that had not previously heard evidence in the case. Despite the revisions, Trump continues to deny any wrongdoing regarding election interference and maintains unsubstantiated claims of widespread voter fraud.
