Brazil Reports First Deaths From Oropouche Fever

Brazil has reported its first two fatalities from Oropouche fever, caused by the mosquito-borne Oropouche virus (OROV), with both victims being women under 30 from Bahia. The Ministry of Health noted that until now, there had been no recorded deaths from this disease in scientific literature. In 2024, Brazil has seen a significant increase in cases, with 7,236 reported and a 766.6% rise compared to the previous year. Health officials are also investigating a possible third death and six cases of vertical transmission, raising concerns about the virus's effects during pregnancy, including potential birth defects. The disease presents symptoms similar to severe dengue fever, prompting health authorities to enhance surveillance and diagnostic testing across the country. Precautions against mosquito bites remain crucial as the outbreak continues to evolve.
