Government Criticizes SC Creamy Layer Proposal

Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal criticized the opposition for creating confusion about the Supreme Court's observation on the creamy layer within SCs and STs, emphasizing that Ambedkar's Constitution does not include such a provision. The Supreme Court ruled that states could sub-classify SCs and STs but did not mandate the implementation of the creamy layer concept. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge condemned this idea, urging the government to legislate against it, while BSP chief Mayawati called for all parties to clarify their stance. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw reaffirmed the government's commitment to the Constitution, stating that it does not provide for a creamy layer among SCs and STs. Meanwhile, Congress plans to form a committee for consultations on sub-categorization, reflecting ongoing debates over the issue.
