Former FCI Dublin Guard Indicted on Abuse Charges

Darrell Wayne Smith, a former correctional officer at the now-closed Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California, faces a total of 15 counts of sexual abuse following a superseding indictment that adds two new victims to the allegations. Originally indicted on 12 counts involving three inmates, the new charges, which include a civil rights violation, stem from incidents reported to have occurred as early as August 2016 and continuing until May 2021. Smith is accused of sexually abusing multiple female inmates under his supervision, with allegations of locking them in cells and coercing them into sexual acts. The Bureau of Prisons had previously closed FCI Dublin due to a culture of abuse, with other staff members also charged in connection to sexual misconduct. If convicted, Smith could face life in prison on the most severe charges. His arraignment has not been set, but a jury trial is scheduled to begin in March 2025.
