Forest Fire Forces Evacuations in Izmir, Turkey
A significant forest fire has been raging in Izmir, Turkey, for three days, prompting widespread evacuations as strong winds fueled the blaze, which has affected around 1,600 hectares and damaged at least 16 homes and numerous businesses. Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya reported that approximately 900 residents were evacuated from five districts, with firefighting efforts involving over 300 personnel, helicopters, water bombers, and ground crews. The fire, which began in the Yamanlar Karatepe area, spread rapidly due to winds reaching speeds of 50 kilometers an hour, forcing the closure of roads and the evacuation of an animal shelter. As the winds subsided, aerial firefighting operations resumed to combat the relentless flames. Meanwhile, in the broader context of the region, six other fires are also ongoing in various Turkish cities, highlighting the increasing threat of wildfires amid climate change. Experts suggest that such extreme weather events are becoming more common and intense due to climate change influences.
