Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Elections Set for September
The Election Commission of India has announced that Jammu and Kashmir will hold assembly elections in three phases on September 18, 25, and October 1, with results due on October 4. This marks the first election in the region since 2014, as J&K has been without an elected government since June 2018 when the PDP-BJP coalition collapsed. The Supreme Court had mandated that elections be conducted by September 30, 2024. The latest electoral roll shows 87.09 lakh voters, including 3.71 lakh first-time voters, across 90 constituencies. Concurrently, Haryana will hold its elections, coinciding with the final phase in J&K. Political leaders in J&K, including Omar Abdullah, have called for timely elections, emphasizing the region's prolonged lack of governance since the imposition of President's Rule and the abrogation of Article 370.
