UK High Court Resolves Asylum Seeker Deportation Cases
The UK's High Court settled the cases of three asylum seekers who challenged the government's plan to deport them to Rwanda after the new Labour government abandoned the controversial deportation policy. Government lawyer James Eadie confirmed that the claimants' cases would be withdrawn, aligning with the new asylum policy that excludes removals to Rwanda. The Supreme Court had previously deemed the deportation scheme illegal under international law due to Rwanda not being a safe country for asylum seekers. The Labour government's decision marked an end to the Migration and Economic Development Partnership Agreement with Rwanda, despite the UK having already paid substantial sums under the deal. The policy shift follows ongoing legal challenges and protests against the deportation plan, emphasizing the UK's evolving approach to asylum and migration policies.
