FEMA Offers Assistance Following Hurricane Debby
In response to the devastating effects of Hurricane Debby, President Biden has declared a major disaster in several Florida counties, including Sarasota and Manatee, enabling residents to access federal aid for temporary housing and home repairs. FEMA has expanded assistance eligibility for homeowners and renters, allowing them to apply for disaster aid online, through the FEMA app, or by phone, and has set up a resource center to assist those affected. The storm, which made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane on August 5, resulted in significant flooding, with over 500 rescues in Sarasota and around 200 in Manatee County. Residents are encouraged to file insurance claims promptly, as FEMA assistance cannot duplicate benefits covered by insurance. Community agencies are collaborating at resource centers to provide additional support, and FEMA teams are going door-to-door to assess needs. For further assistance, affected individuals can visit DisasterAssistance.gov or contact FEMA directly.
