Historic Homes Relocated for Parking Garage in Hartford
Four historic 19th-century homes were relocated through Hartford, Connecticut, as part of the preparation for a new $60 million parking garage for Connecticut Children’s Hospital. The homes, over 125 years old, were moved intact using hydraulic jacks, causing temporary street closures and power outages. One house had to be split in half for the move, drawing crowds of onlookers eager to capture the spectacle. The relocation cost approximately $1 million, with Hartford contributing an additional $3 million, after initial plans to demolish the homes were reconsidered following their historic designation. Construction of the parking facility, which will provide over 900 spaces and include a restaurant, is set to begin next month and is expected to open alongside a new clinical tower at the hospital in late 2024.
