Junior Tour of Wales Rerouted Due to Speed Limit
The Junior Tour of Wales cycling race has been altered and shortened due to Wales' newly implemented 20mph speed limit, which prevents support vehicles from keeping pace with riders without exceeding the limit. This has led to changes in three of the five stages, with the race finish relocated from Nantgaredig, home to Olympic medallist Emma Finucane. Organisers, including Beicio Cymru's Robbie George, have expressed support for the speed limit but highlighted its complications for racing logistics, particularly regarding safety measures. The Welsh Government has stated it worked with race organisers to ensure the event could proceed safely, though concerns about the rigidity of the speed limit persist among local officials and residents. Polls indicate significant public opposition to the blanket enforcement of the speed limit for events like this. The race, featuring 100 junior cyclists, will begin in Brynmawr and conclude on Tumble Mountain on August 26.
