Karen Read Seeks Dismissal of Two Charges
Karen Read's defense team has filed a motion to dismiss two of the three charges against her following a mistrial, citing unanimous jury agreement on her not being guilty of second-degree murder and leaving the scene of an accident. This comes after a fourth juror, identified as Juror D, corroborated statements from three other jurors that the jury was only deadlocked on the manslaughter charge. The defense argues that the judge should have polled the jury on each count before declaring a mistrial. The District Attorney's office plans to retry the case, with a hearing scheduled for July 22. Judge Beverly Cannone has not yet responded to the motion, while the defense insists that retrying Read on these charges would violate Double Jeopardy protections.
