Google removes Pixel app
Google is set to remove a pre-installed app called Showcase from its Pixel smartphones following concerns about a significant security vulnerability. The app, created by Smith Micro for Verizon, allows devices to enter demo mode but operates using unencrypted HTTP, exposing devices to potential hacking risks, including remote code execution. While Google claims there is no evidence of active exploitation and that the app is disabled by default, the security firm iVerify, which discovered the issue, highlighted the serious implications for corporate users. Palantir, which alerted Google to the problem, has ceased issuing Android devices due to these vulnerabilities. The removal of Showcase will occur in an upcoming software update, and Google has reassured that it does not represent a broader Android or Pixel vulnerability. The controversy raises questions about the security of third-party applications embedded within device firmware.
