University of Virginia Tightens Protest Policies

Virginia's public universities, including UVA, VCU, and JMU, have introduced new policies governing campus demonstrations and public expression in response to a significant rise in protests, particularly pro-Palestinian movements. The updated regulations prohibit camping and the use of tents without permits, and require individuals to show ID if wearing masks on campus, reflecting a commitment to maintaining safety while allowing free expression. University officials assert that the changes aim to balance students' First Amendment rights with the operational needs of the institutions. The policies also include restrictions on outdoor events during nighttime hours and specify penalties for noncompliance, such as temporary suspension or disenrollment. UVA's spokesperson emphasized a desire to avoid past confrontations that resulted in arrests during protests.
