Philippines Seeks Bids for 40 Fighter Jets

The Philippines is initiating a procurement process for 40 new multi-role fighter jets to enhance its military capabilities amid escalating tensions with China over the South China Sea. Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro emphasized the need for a minimum of 36 aircraft to establish a credible defense posture, with plans to reserve four additional units. The government is seeking creative financing solutions due to budget constraints, including proposals for installment payments and potential syndicated loans. While specific models have not been disclosed, the country is considering various options, including those from Saab and Lockheed Martin, as well as South Korea's KF-21. This initiative aligns with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s broader military modernization plan, which aims to allocate approximately $35 billion for defense enhancements over the next decade.
