Vittorio Emanuele, Son of Italy's Last King, Dies at 86
Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, son of Italy's last king, died at the age of 86 in Geneva. He was born in Naples in 1937 and lived much of his life in exile in Switzerland following the abolition of the Italian monarchy. Vittorio Emanuele was head of the House of Savoy, which ruled Italy from 1861 to 1946. He was banned from Italy and returned in 2002 after the Italian parliament lifted the exile measures and he swore loyalty to the republic. His life was marked by controversy and scandal, including his marriage to Marina Doria, accusations of involvement in a murder case, and a history of refusing to swear allegiance to the Italian Republic.
