The Australian government is intensifying preparations for the potential arrival of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu strain, which could devastate local wildlife and even pose risks to humans. With the virus confirmed in western Antarctica earlier this year, experts warn it is a matter of 'when, not if' it will reach Australia, particularly during the spring bird migration.
