Former eBay Manager Sentenced in Cyberstalking Case

Brian Gilbert, a former senior manager of special operations for eBay, was sentenced to time served, a year of supervised release, and a $20,000 fine for his role in a cyberstalking campaign against Natick, Massachusetts, couple David and Ina Steiner. The harassment included sending disturbing items like a preserved fetal pig, a bloody pig Halloween mask, and live cockroaches, as well as surveilling the Steiners' home. The campaign was orchestrated in response to the couple's critical coverage of eBay on their newsletter, EcommerceBytes. Six other former eBay employees have also been sentenced, with penalties ranging up to 57 months in prison. Despite these sentences, the Steiners believe that higher-level executives, including former CEO Devin Wenig, should also be held accountable. eBay has agreed to pay a $3 million penalty and seeks to settle a civil lawsuit with the Steiners, who are seeking punitive damages.
