Child Homelessness Crisis in Australia Revealed
A recent report from Homelessness Australia highlights a critical housing crisis affecting children in Australia, revealing that over 95,000 children sought help in the 2022-23 financial year, with more than 19,000 turned away due to insufficient resources. Despite 76,000 children receiving some assistance, over 25,000 remained homeless, marking a 3.2% increase from the previous year. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children are disproportionately affected, representing nearly a third of homeless children. The report underscores a lack of funding for affordable housing and support services, exacerbated by rising living costs and a scarcity of rental options. Homelessness Australia has called for a targeted action plan to better address the needs of young people. The findings were announced ahead of Homelessness Week 2024, with new Housing Minister Clare O'Neil set to address the crisis.
