Hamas Names Interim Leaders After Haniyeh Assassination
In the wake of Ismail Haniyeh's assassination in Tehran, Hamas has named interim leaders to guide the group until new elections are held. Mohammed Ismail Darwish, also known as Abu Omar Hassan, has been appointed as the interim leader, while Yahya Sinwar has been named the new political leader of Hamas. Darwish will oversee coordination between various factions of the group until the 2025 elections, though he will not be eligible to run. Khaled Meshaal, a former leader who survived an Israeli assassination attempt, and Khalil al-Hayya, a senior Hamas official, are among the main contenders for permanent leadership. Haniyeh's death has escalated regional tensions, with Iran vowing retaliation against Israel, raising fears of wider conflict. The ongoing Gaza war and internal dynamics within Hamas will heavily influence the group's future direction and leadership structure.
