Man Gets 20 Years for Capitol Riot Violence
David Dempsey, a 37-year-old Californian, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his violent actions during the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot, making it one of the longest sentences among Capitol riot prosecutions. Dempsey pleaded guilty to assaulting police officers with dangerous weapons, including flag poles, a metal crutch, and pepper spray, injuring at least two officers. Prosecutors described Dempsey as one of the most violent participants, noting his history of political violence and prior convictions. His sentence is only surpassed by Enrique Tarrio, the former Proud Boys leader, who received 22 years for seditious conspiracy. Dempsey expressed regret for his actions, calling his conduct reprehensible and apologizing to the officers he assaulted.
