Montgomery County authorities issued a new warning about a sophisticated gold bar scam targeting seniors, resulting in millions of dollars in losses. Scammers pose as federal agents, convincing victims to convert their savings into gold bars for 'safekeeping' at the U.S. Department of Treasury. Seven victims have been identified, losing a collective $6.3 million, with more victims likely. Five arrests have been made, and the suspects have been linked to organized crime networks in China and India. Law enforcement officials stress that government agencies will never request gold or cash via phone and advise residents to remain vigilant. Recovery of the stolen money is deemed unlikely.
