China Provides Support for Myanmar Elections

China has pledged technical support and aid to Myanmar's military regime to facilitate a national census and upcoming elections, indicating strong backing for the junta amid ongoing armed conflict. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi's meeting with junta leader Min Aung Hlaing focused on an 'all-inclusive election,' although many view these elections as lacking legitimacy due to the disbanding of opposition parties. The military government has extended emergency rule and aims to prepare census data crucial for voter lists. Additionally, discussions covered regional security, economic cooperation, and the escalating conflict in border areas, where the junta has lost ground. Wang Yi reaffirmed China's commitment to Myanmar's sovereignty and political stability, opposing external interference. Following this visit, Wang Yi is set to attend a regional foreign ministers' meeting in Thailand.
