Lithium mine in Chhattisgarh
India is set to open its first lithium mines in the Katghora region of Chhattisgarh, following the Geological Survey of India's confirmation of significant lithium deposits, with concentrations ranging from 10 to 2,000 parts per million across approximately 250 hectares. This decision was announced during a National Mineral Exploration Trust meeting, emphasizing the importance of extracting minerals while conserving the environment. The Ministry of Mines is also facilitating the allocation of 20 critical mineral blocks across various states, including Chhattisgarh. Meanwhile, the Mines Ministry plans further exploration of lithium blocks in Jammu and Kashmir to enhance their commercial viability after previous auction attempts failed to attract sufficient interest. The J&K reserves are estimated at 5.9 million tonnes, representing India's largest confirmed lithium find. These developments are part of India's broader strategy to reduce reliance on mineral imports and support the growth of industries such as renewable energy and electric vehicle manufacturing.
