Girls camp in Pinellas County
In response to the underrepresentation of women in construction, represented by only 10.8% of the workforce according to a 2023 report, various initiatives are being implemented to engage young girls in STEM and construction fields. Pinellas County Schools launched a girls-only construction camp in partnership with the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), where participants learned hands-on skills in framing, electrical work, and more. Simultaneously, a STEM camp in Ardmore, Pennsylvania, focused on inspiring middle school girls to explore science and technology through project-based learning. These camps aim to break stereotypes around gender roles in trades and encourage more young women to pursue careers in these fields. The efforts are complemented by similar programs in Baltimore, where girls are learning construction skills along with business development. Collectively, these programs hope to shift perceptions and increase female participation in traditionally male-dominated industries.
