AIMPLB Rejects Uniform Civil Code Proposal
The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has firmly opposed the proposed uniform civil code (UCC), declaring it unacceptable for Muslims in India and asserting that they will not compromise on Sharia law. This response follows Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech advocating for a secular civil code and denouncing religious personal laws as communal. AIMPLB spokesperson Dr. SQR Ilyas criticized Modi for allegedly misleading the public by using the term 'secular' instead of the constitutional 'uniform,' emphasizing that such a law would infringe upon Muslims' rights to practice their religion as protected under the Shariat Application Act of 1937 and Article 25 of the Constitution. The board highlighted that family laws of other communities also derive from their religious traditions, arguing that a shift towards a uniform civil code reflects Western practices. They warned against the polarization of society and urged citizens to remember the sacrifices of freedom fighters rather than succumb to religious animosity. Modi's comments have been met with widespread concern about potential discrimination and division within the nation.
