SoCalGas in Rancho Palos Verdes
SoCalGas has announced a planned gas service shutoff for approximately 135 homes in the Portuguese Bend area of Rancho Palos Verdes, starting at 9 a.m. on July 29, due to significant and worsening land movement that threatens public safety. The utility company cited the need for immediate action, having already relocated over 600 feet of pipeline and installed new emergency measures in response to the ongoing geological instability. Despite no current gas leaks being reported, local officials and residents have expressed frustration over the short notice and the potential impact on residents who rely on gas for heating and cooking. The city is in discussions with SoCalGas about delaying the shutoff if feasible, while also preparing contingency plans for affected residents. This land movement issue has been worsening since heavy rains earlier this year, causing damage to infrastructure and homes, including the historic Wayfarers Chapel. Residents have been warned against connecting alternative fuel sources to their gas meters due to safety concerns.
