Hengqin driverless car
Hengqin Island has officially opened its entire road network of 330 kilometers for driverless vehicle testing, as part of a broader initiative to establish the Greater Bay Area as a hub for autonomous driving technology. This move follows a phased plan that began in September 2022 and recently concluded with the approval of the final 135 kilometers for testing. The initiative aims to provide self-driving car manufacturers with varied traffic scenarios to enhance their algorithms and attract more enterprises and research institutions to the area. Local officials believe this will boost the development of the smart transportation industry in Hengqin. The expansion of testing capabilities is also expected to improve public confidence in autonomous technologies. Other Chinese cities, such as Shenzhen, have been similarly advancing their autonomous vehicle testing programs.
