Costas Kadis Nominated for EU Commissioner

Cyprus has nominated Costas Kadis, a biologist and former cabinet minister, as its candidate for the European Commission, set to replace outgoing Commissioner Stella Kyriakides. Government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis emphasized Kadis's extensive experience in various governmental roles and his academic credentials as key factors in his selection. Kadis has previously held positions as Minister of Health, Education, and Agriculture, and is currently the Acting Dean at Frederick University's School of Health Sciences. President Nikos Christodoulides communicated the nomination to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, highlighting the criteria for Kadis's selection. Christodoulides also expressed gratitude to Kyriakides for her contributions, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. If approved by the EU parliament, Kadis will take on responsibilities in a specific policy area within the Commission.
