Neuer and Sommer Announce International Retirements
Germany's goalkeeper Manuel Neuer has announced his retirement from international football, following the recent retirements of teammates Toni Kroos, Thomas Müller, and Ilkay Gündogan. Neuer, who debuted internationally in 2009, played 124 matches and was pivotal in Germany's 2014 World Cup win. Concurrently, Switzerland's goalkeeper Yann Sommer also declared his international retirement after a 12-year career, featuring in 94 matches and helping Switzerland reach the Euro 2024 quarter-finals. Sommer, now focusing on his club career with Inter Milan, had notable moments including a penalty shootout win against France at Euro 2020. His departure is expected to elevate Gregor Kobel of Borussia Dortmund to Switzerland's first-choice goalkeeper. Both announcements mark the end of significant eras for their respective national teams.
