Spotify Accuses Apple of Unfair Practices
Apple has discontinued the technology that allowed iPhone users to control volume on connected devices via Spotify Connect using physical volume buttons, forcing users to rely on an in-app slider instead. This change, effective from September 3 but already affecting some users, does not impact Bluetooth, AirPlay, or Android users. Spotify is working with Apple on a solution and has cited the change as a violation of the EU's Digital Markets Act, which mandates equal access to hardware and software features for third-party services. Users have expressed frustration over the added inconvenience, especially when managing volume during social gatherings or when the phone is not in hand. Spotify has requested Apple to provide similar integration options available for Apple Music on devices like HomePod and Apple TV, but Apple requires apps to integrate with HomePod to access the necessary technology.
